Lux Arcadia (ルクス・アーカディア Rukusu Ākadia), also known as the Weakest Undefeated or the Black Hero, is the former prince of the Old Arcadia Empire, member of the Seven Dragon Paladine and the main male protagonist of Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut.

He was a prince of the Old Arcadia Empire, but helped overthrow it in a rebellion five years ago. He worked as a handyman. He later met with the princess of the New Kingdom Atismata, Lisesharte, when he accidentally broke into the bathroom of the girl's dormitory. He is the user of the Divine Drag-Ride Bahamut. He imprisoned by the Academy until they released him but forced him to enroll as a student the Royal Officer Academy.

Following the death of Queen Raffi and the final battle against Fugil Arcadia, Lux has become the first king of the New Kingdom. As well as the husband of Lisesharte Atismata, Krulcifer Einfolk, Philuffy Aingram, Celestia Ralgris, and Yoruka Kirihime.

Appearance[]

Lux is a handsome young man with silver hair and grey eyes, traits of the Arcadia Empire's imperial family. He wears a black collar as a sign of his servitude to the New Kingdom Atismata.

Although he has several sets of clothing, in general he is seen dressed in the men´s uniform of the academy (this was prepared by Relie and is only for him).

When he met Celis, he had to crossdress in the female academy uniform and wear a straight black wig, calling himself "Luno."

Personality[]

Lux has a very kind personality, being willing to help anyone. Lux has proven to have a strong moral code, even trying to avoid killing his enemies during the revolt. According to Magialca Zen Vanfrick, while Lux's way can be considered the harder method, it has allowed him to gain more allies then what most people would expect from someone of his position, displaying great charisma. This is what earned Lux the complete trust and respect of all the students at the academy, most of his fellow Seven Dragon Paladin members and the New Kingdom. He was even chosen to be the new king of the New Kingdom because he was considered the best suited for the role of unifying the kingdom.

Most of the time, Lux is very shy around girls his age. This is not helped by how most of the girls at the academy try to get closer to Lux because he's the only boy there and how they try to make him do "odd jobs" for them.

However, Lux can become very serious, calm and calculating when he wants to be. Krulcifer once mentioned that when angered enough, Lux can become aggressive and destructive in battle. He has likewise displayed great foresight and wisdom, which often surprises most people given how he usually behaves.

As his sister mentioned, Lux also has the trait that makes him stubborn. When he wants to help someone, he does it, regardless of the situation. He admits he can be quite a showoff. This has caused Lux to be very reckless in dangerous situations as he will push his body past its limits to reach the victory he wishes for, one where no one dies.

Lux has shown to be very skilled at hiding his true strength. For five years since the fall of the Old Empire, Lux has managed to prevent most people from realizing that he was the Black Hero by creating the image that all he could do was defend in battle, making him appear weaker than he actually is, while also getting stronger at the same time.

History[]

Background[]

Anime Episode 1 Lux Past 2

Lux as one of the Princes of Arcadia House.

Lux was born as the illegitimate seventh son of Emperor Diseld, along with his younger sister Airi. With the of the eldest son Fugil, Lux's brothers looked down on him. Lux had few opportunities to go outside, as he was taught by a private tutor and had to stay by the side of the often-sick Airi.[1]

When Lux was eight, he met Dalto Aingram, a wealthy merchant whose late wife had been a friend of Lux's mother, and was introduced to his daughters Relie and Philuffy.[2] Lux became friends with Philuffy after an incident in which Abel (Lux's half-brother and the sixth prince) and his friend Ragreed attempted to frame Philuffy for damaging a valuable statue, only for Lux to take the blame instead.[1]

About two months after Lux and Philuffy became friends, Lux's maternal grandfather Wade criticized the emperor for his policies. As punishment, Diseld ordered Wade to be imprisoned and for Lux and his mother to be banished from the imperial court to a residence on the outskirts of the imperial capital. Lux and his mother were thus exposed to the resentment of the commoners. When Lux was ten, a carriage carrying him and his mother fell off a cliff. Lux begged for someone to help his seriously-injured mother, only to be booed and hit by thrown rocks. This resulted in Lux's mother's death.[3]

After his mother's death, Lux was filled with hatred towards everyone else, to the point of pushing away Philuffy. However, Philuffy persisted and went to Lux's mother's grave every day to lay a flower on it, even getting herself injured on one occasion. As a result of Philuffy's efforts, Lux was able to move past his hatred. Philuffy eventually had to leave the capital due to her family's work. As they said their goodbyes to each other, Lux swore to create a country where girls like Philuffy would be able to feel safe, while Philuffy gave him a kiss as a good luck charm so that they would one day meet again.[3]

Lux later became known as the youngest Drag-Knight in history. He gained several hundred victories in training and mock battles but was not recognized due to both his illegitimacy and his objections to the Old Empire's policies.[4] By the age of 12, he had invented the Drag-Knight secret technique Quick Draw.[5]

Five years ago, the Old Empire began abducting young girls for human experimentation to create weapons, one of whom was Philuffy Aingram.[4] Around the same time, Count Atismata (one of the Old Empire's nobles) gathered support from other lords and neighboring countries to launch a rebellion. At Fugil's instigation, Lux decided to take part in the coup to save Philuffy.[4] Lux fought for the rebel side while hiding his identity.[6] Unknown to them, the count's sister Raffi was in love with Waybra Hemt, one of the Old Empire's supporters. Raffi revealed her brother's plans to Waybra, who passed this on to the Emperor, who then decided to allow the rebellion to go ahead so that all the rebels could be found and dealt with.[7][8]

Lux discovered that Philuffy had died as a result of the experiments. He despaired and intended to abandon the plan by heading out to kill the Emperor himself. This forced Fugil to use Ouroboros to rewrite Lux's memories.[8]

Lux and Fugil created a plan to ensure the success of the revolution. Count Atismata's forces would attack the imperial capital's castle, creating a diversion for Lux and Fugil to infiltrate via a secret passage, capture the rest of the imperial family and open the gates to allow the count in. To increase the time that Lux could use Bahamut and also allow him to use Over Limit, Fugil had the Automaton Arshalia Rei Arcadia perform Baptism on him.[6]

Anime Episode 1 Bahamut

Lux as the "Black Hero" during the coup.

On the final day of the rebellion, everything went wrong. Due to Raffi's betrayal, Count Atismata has killed just now and Diseld decided to take Airi hostage. When Lux entered the throne room, Diseld threatened to have Airi killed if Lux didn't surrender. Fugil was again forced to intervene, saving Airi and killing the Emperor's guards. He then summoned Ouroboros in preparation to rewrite memories again. Fugil wore Bahamut and single-handedly fought and defeated the Empire's army. Fugil told Lux to kill the remaining imperial family, announce to the populace that he had conspired with Count Atismata to achieve the rebellion, and become the new emperor.[7] Lux refused to do this and attacked Fugil.[9] He lost and Fugil proceeded to use Ouroboros to rewrite the world's memories.[8] Lux now believed that he had defeated the 1200 Drag-Knights of the Old Empire without killing them, only for Fugil to finish them off along with the imperial family. He (and a few others who knew that he was involved in the rebellion) mistakenly thought that he was the Black Hero - a legendary figure who single-handedly destroyed the Old Empire's army and caused its destruction.[5]

As the last known survivors of the Old Empire (Fugil having gone into hiding), Lux and Airi were labeled as "criminals" by the New Kingdom. They were pardoned, but charged with a debt worth 1/5 of the New Kingdom's national budget. Both Lux and Airi were required to work to pay off the debt: Lux by performing odd jobs for the citizens, Airi by deciphering ancient manuscripts and updating Drag-Ride manuals. Airi was additionally kept in the Royal Officer Academy as a hostage to prevent Lux running away or misbehaving.[10]

To train in the use of Bahamut despite needing to keep it a secret, Lux participated in mock battles in the New Kingdom's royal capital using a modified Wyvern: one that had armor added to recreate the weight and air resistance that would be experienced in Bahamut. In these battles he fought purely defensively, only avoiding the enemy's attacks while never attacking himself, to train himself to see through an enemy's movements. For this habit, he became known as the Weakest Undefeated.[5]

Fallen Prince Arc[]

Lux finds himself in a public bath, on top of a naked Lisesharte Atismata and surrounded by other naked girls. He tries to defuse the situation using a technique that he had previously learned from a bar owner for praising girls, but this only worsens the situation and causes the girls to chase him. He reminisces about how he ended up in this situation: he chased a cat that had stolen a girl's purse across the rooftops, only to fall through the roof of the bath, and then he pushed Lisha out of the way of falling debris. Lux runs away but runs into the Triad - Shalice, Tillfur, and Noct - who equip Drag-Rides and attempt to catch him. Lux manages to evade them but then runs into Krulcifer, who incapacitates him with a martial arts throw.[11]

The next day, Lux wakes up in a jail cell with his personal belongings confiscated. The blonde girl from last night appears and introduces herself as Lisesharte Atismata, the princess of the New Kingdom that overthrew the Old Empire. Moreover, Lux learns that he is in the Royal Officer Academy, the location of his next job (to help maintain Drag-Rides). Lisha brings him to Relie's office where Lux explains himself. However, Lisha refuses to let him work at the Academy. Relie leaves it to her to decide, and Lisha decides to settle the matter with a duel between herself and Lux. Prior to the duel, Lux meets and talks to Airi along with Noct, her friend.[10]

At the Drag-Ride practice field, Lisha says that she'll tell Lux the reason for her challenge if he can defeat her. Lux proposes that they make it as if the duel never happened if it ends in a draw, but this angers Lisha. Lux fights Lisha, who is using Tiamat, only using his custom Wyvern.[12] The duel is interrupted by the appearance of a Gargoyle, which attacks the audience. Lux goes to hold back the Gargoyle while telling Lisha to bombard it on his signal. Though Lux manages to wound the Gargoyle, it uses a trick (pretending to attack the audience again) that allows it to defeat him. However, this was within Lux's calculations as it gives Lisha the opportunity to destroy the Gargoyle. Lux loses consciousness as Lisha prepares to announce something.[13]

Lux wakes up with Lisha sitting beside him. They talk and come to an understanding. Lisha reveals the reason for challenging Lux to a duel: the slave brand of the Old Empire on her stomach, which would cause chaos if others knew of it. Lux promises to keep it a secret. Lisha also reveals that Lux will no longer work as a mechanic apprentice but instead become a student of the Academy.[13]

After being enrolled in the Academy, Lux is introduced to his class by his teacher Raigree. Lux is nervous about being the only male student but is relieved to find that Philuffy is also in the class. He is, however, embarrassed when she requires him to call her "Phi-chan". During the lunch break, Lux's classmates and other students ask him to do jobs for them, causing Tillfur to intervene and organize the requests. Lisha asks Lux to eat with her, causing Philuffy to confront her. Krulcifer then appears and leads Lux away, with the excuse that she was asked by the principal. Once the two of them are alone, Krulcifer asks Lux several things, finishing with a job request: to find the Black Hero.[14]

Night arrives and Lux takes a bath. Airi and Noct appear to tell him to come to the grand hall of the girls' dormitory once he's done. Lux does so, and it turns out that the others have put on a party to celebrate his admission to the Academy. Afterward, Lux is tired and falls asleep in the hallway, so Philuffy carries him to her room and sleeps with him in the same bed. Lux wakes up and is shocked at the situation, even more so when Tillfur sees them.[14]

A few days later, Airi and Lux have breakfast together and discuss their situation. He then heads to the Atelier for a job request, discovering that Lisha is the Atelier chief and the one who sent the request. Lisha demonstrates her Chimeric Wyvern and gives Lux his Wyvern, which she has repaired and heavily modified. Lux asks her to revert the modifications. Lisha then recommends Lux for the Knight Squadron, but some of the existing members object. The issue is settled with another fight, but since Lux doesn't attack the opponents his membership is still rejected by the majority vote. Finally, Lisha asks Lux to go on a date with her. During the date, Lisha talks about her history and what it means to be a princess. They return to the Academy and Lux falls asleep in the drawing room. He wakes up to find Krulcifer present as well and the two of them talk, only to be interrupted by an alarm[4]

Lux and others gather in the Drag-Ride hangar where they are briefed on the situation: a large Abyss has appeared. Many of them head out, but Lux stays behind as he isn't a member of the Knight Squadron. He talks to both Krulcifer and Philuffy, the latter mentioning that she can hear the sound of a flute (though Lux can't hear anything). The situation worsens, with the revelation that Old Empire loyalists are responsible for the attack. Lux decides to head out, despite his sister's protests and asks Krulcifer to help him by revealing his knowledge of the Black Hero. Lux saves Lisha from Velvet Barth by using his Wyvern as a shield, then switches to Bahamut. Lux takes out all of the Abyss and enemy Drag-Rides but loses consciousness from the strain of using Bahamut.[5]

Lux wakes up to find Airi worried about him. After greeting various other students, he's told to come to Relie's office. Lux stops by the Atelier first and finds that Bahamut is being stored there. Confused, he rushes to the office and is congratulated on his official admission to the Academy. Lisha offers Lux her sword and he accepts.[15]

Abilities[]

Lux is an extremely skilled Drag-Knight. He was the youngest Drag-Knight in the history of the Old Empire, gaining a license at the age of 12.[13] Under the New Kingdom, he was skilled enough to never receive an attack during mock battles in the capital.[5] He has managed to defeat a least three different Ragnaroks and even Sacred Eclipse.

Baptism: Lux has currently gone through Baptism four times, gaining different powers each time.

  1. Gained the ability of analyzing his opponent's attack, movement and thought patterns, bordering on the level of future prediction after receiving baptism from Fugil prior to the fall of the Arcadian Empire.
  2. Was resurrected by Sacred Eclipse after sacrificing himself for Yoruka, gained an increase in stamina.
  3. Was Baptized by Arshalia(android) during the trials of Avalon, gained a massive increase in his ability to concentrate.
  4. Aeril baptized him during the Rebellion Arc to give him the same disguise ability she has, he can make himself appear to be someone completely different using just perception interference.

High Drag-Ride aptitude: Despite being a male, Lux has a higher Drag-Ride aptitude than the average female. This allows him to operate even a Divine Drag-Ride for a long period of time.[5] Lux's high aptitude is likely because of his lineage and the Baptism he's gone through.

Master swordsman: Lux is an extremely masterful swordsman who is immensely well-versed in swordplay and sword fighting. With his impeccable swordsmanship skill, he is capable of aiming at the vital points of Drag-Rides (the arm, the Force Cores, and the Sword Device) while not hitting the pilots' bodies. Lux can defeat an entire army of Drag-Knights without killing any of them.

Throwing weapons Master: In Bahamut, Lux can throw objects with enough power and accuracy that they possess speed comparable to bullets and can strike down Drag-Knights at a distance. He can even do this while fighting a Ragnarok at the same time.[16]

Quick Draw: The first of the Drag-Knight secret arts, a high-speed slash performed by using mind control operation in addition to body control operation. As the inventor of the technique, Lux's mastery of it exceeds Velvet's.[5]

Recoil Burst: The second of the Drag-Knight secret arts, an extremely destructive slash possessing dozens of times more power than a normal one. It is powerful enough to instantly inflict crippling damage on Azi Dahaka, a Divine Drag-Ride with tough armor that is additionally protected by Auto-Shield and a Reload on Fire-enhanced barrier. This involves Lux intentionally allowing Bahamut to rampage, then using body control operation to attack at full power while simultaneously using mind control operation to restrain that same attack. This technique is extremely dangerous to the point of being called forbidden as if Lux cannot perfectly restrain the energy flowing from his Drag-Ride's Force Core, then Bahamut will rampage and become a threat to both the surroundings and Lux himself.[17]

End Action: The third of the Drag-Ride secret arts, a seemingly endless series of consecutive attacks. Using this technique, Lux can sever the several hundred tentacles of Poseidon with melee attacks while simultaneously taking down several dozen Drag-Knights using thrown weapons. This involves alternating between usage of the two control operation types, body control operation and mind control operation, to eliminate the interval that normally exists after a Drag-Ride attack and thus attacks almost indefinitely. According to Airi, it ends when he finishes predicting his opponent's intentions, not when his attacks are interrupted.[16] In practice, this technique is limited by Lux's stamina. When Lux uses it against Yoruka (who uses End Action at the same time), both of them stop out of exhaustion after unleashing over a hundred attacks in a few seconds.[18] In the anime, he is shown to dart all over a Ragnarok, slicing tentacles continuously at an absurd rate.

Tuning: After observing Singlen's use of this technique, Lux learns how to use it himself. This involves manually changing the Drag-Ride's settings in the middle of battle. These techniques are extremely risky as they leave the user's body vulnerable to attack.[19][20]

  • Battle Array - Vicissitude: Lux stops his Drag-Ride's automatic barrier generation and instead manually creates a moving barrier to parry an enemy's attack. This is tough enough to repel an attack from Dilwy, an EX Class Drag-Knight with the increased strength of a Nocturnal.[20]
  • Battle Array - Aeon Fire: Lux diverts power from other functions to his weapon, increasing its power. The resulting attack can break through the maximum output barrier of an EX Wyvern and damage it to the point that it cannot move for several seconds. This technique weakens other functions such as defense.[19][20]

Break Purge: It is a basic operation ability that consists of purging a part of the Drag-Ride's weaponry and armor, which reduces the load for the drag knight. The drag ride's armor fires like buckshot to cover a nearby enemy's field of vision, taking them by surprise and stopping their attack. However, using the ability reduces the strength of the barrier and the mobility of the drag ride, so it was almost never used in the middle of combat.

Lux is able to use it to change drag rides in the middle of combat. Faced with an enemy whose movements he doesn't know, Lux is unable to use Quick Shot, so he first uses the Wyvern to study the enemy's movement since this drag ride doesn't have as much consumption as Bahamut. Then use Break Purge to stop the enemy's advance, so he can deploy Bahumut

Drag-Rides[]

Lux's main Drag Ride is the divine Drag Ride Bahamut. It is a jet black wyvern class drag ride with red veins running through its structure. It has an unusually high for stamina of its user, so high in fact, that even lux is required to use a normal wyvern adjusted to Bahamut's weight and shape for the first half of his battles.

Reload on Fire <暴食(リロード・オン・ファイア), lit. "Binge Eating">: Bahamut's Divine Raiment, and its main weapon, which slows and then accelerates time within a target. Specifically, it slows time to a fraction of its usual speed for five seconds, then accelerates it several times in the next five seconds.[5] If Reload on Fire is applied to the other divine drag-rides who hasn't turned on its divine raiment, Reload on Fire will disable its divine raiment until its burst.[18]

  • Quick Shot: A special move in which Lux sees through the preliminary movement of the enemy’s attack, then uses the acceleration by Reload on Fire or Quick Draw to instantly destroy the enemy.[5]
  • Battle Array - Violent Strike: A technique that combines Reload on Fire with tuning in order to apply the time alteration effect to part of the enemy's armor instead of Lux himself. This involves Lux attacking the enemy while invoking Reload on Fire. The parts of the armor that he attacks are then accelerated, tearing them apart and even injuring the flesh of the enemy.[21]

Linker Burst <共鳴波動(リンカー・パルス, lit. "Resonant Fluctuation">: The special armament of Bahamut, which applies telekinetic force to whatever Lux wishes. Its power output is so low it can only pull small objects (like weapons or pieces of rubble) towards the user, not destroy them or send them flying. However, it can be used in combination with End Action, in which Lux pulls objects to his hand and then throws them with the speed of a bullet.[16]

Dagger: Close range and throwing weapons.

Chaos Brand <烙印剣(カオスブランド), lit. "Branded Sword">: Special armament of Bahamut, it looks like a big black blade suited for close-range combat. Unlike other special armaments, it has no special ability.

  • Scale Blade: Due to Lisha's ingenious engineering, Chaos Brand and its counterpart for his general wyvern are capable of reflecting his opponent's attacks with double the power if a special barrier is applied on the sword at just the right moment.

Over Limit: A state in which Bahamut's limiters are removed, resulting in increased output and a different shape. In Over Limit, Bahamut has an extra pair of wings and cartridges attached to the arms that increase flight output and offensive power of the blade, and additional armor. In this state, Bahamut has several times its normal power. Linker Burst is strengthened and can now be used to throw objects at high speed. Reload on Fire is also strengthened. In Over Limit, Lux can defeat opponents as powerful as an evolved Yggdrasil or Rosa in Devil Machia Mode single-handedly. However, due to the increased burden to the body, Lux can only use Over Limit for a limited period of time and is forced into bed rest for weeks after using it.[22][23]

Strategic Thinking: Even Lux's enemies have emitted that Lux's greatest power is his mind and is not only a warrior who not only possesses skill and battle prowess, but also sharp intuition and intellect, being able to successfully overthrow a country at the age of 12, seeing through his opponent's abilities to form a plan and being able to copy other techniques even though he has seen them only once. He is able to exploit weaknesses and weak points in attack patterns with mere observation, and analyze his opponents limits and weaknesses to counteract. He has tactical skills and abilities that enable him to thoroughly analyze a situation in moments and come up with an effective strategy in response. He's been able to invent his very own secret techniques to use in fights.
